意味

たとえ確証がなくても、誰かが悪いことやずるいこと、驚くようなことをやる可能性があると思うこと。

例えば、「この人ならやりかねないな」「この人ならその行動をしても不思議ではない」と言いたいときに使われる表現じゃ。

例文

1. I wouldn’t put it past him to take credit for someone else’s work.
   彼なら、他人の成果を自分の手柄にしてもおかしくない。
2. She lied before,so I wouldn’t put it past her to do it again.
   彼女は前にも嘘をついたし、またやっても驚かないよ。

🎬『スイッチング・プリンセス:もう一度スイッチ！』での使用例

ヴァネッサ・ハジェンズ演じるマーガレットがステイシーと入れ替わった後、いとこのフィオナがマーガレットに化けたステイシーを誘拐して、マーガレットになり替わるという展開がある。召使などにこの陰謀を説明する場面で、次のように言うセリフがあるのじゃ。

“I wouldn’t put it past her.”
彼女ならやりかねないわね。

つまりな、マーガレットは「もしかすると、フィオナがそういう悪だくみを計画しているんじゃないか。」と聞かれて、驚くでもなく、「ええ、あの子ならやりかねない」と、半ば確信をもって言っとるわけじゃ。

これは「証拠がある」というより、「これまでの性格や行いを考えれば、十分あり得る」という意味合いの言葉なんじゃな。

Meaning

This expression is used when you think that someone might do something bad,sneaky,or surprising,even if you don’t have solid proof.
It’s what you say when you’re thinking,“Knowing this person,I wouldn’t be surprised at all,”or “That’s exactly the kind of thing they might do.”

🎬 Example from 『The Princess Switch: Switched Again』

In “The Princess Switch: Switched Again“,there’s a scene where Margaret, played by Vanessa Hudgens,switches places with Stacy.Then her cousin Fiona kidnaps Stacy,who is disguised as Margaret and takes Margaret’s place herself.Quite a bold scheme,I must say.

When Margaret explains this plot to her servants,she says:

“I wouldn’t put it past her.”

Which means,simply:“She’s the kind of person who would do something like that.”

Margaret isn’t shocked at all.When asked whether Fiona could really go that far,she calmly replies,
“Yes… knowing her, she might very well do it.”

This expression doesn’t mean Margaret has proof.
Rather,it means that based on Fiona’s past behavior and personality, such a scheme is entirely believable.
