意味

「気取る」「偉そうにふるまう」「お高くとまる」といった意味のイディオム。

この表現は、自分を実際よりも立派に見せようとしたり、他人よりも優れているかのように振る舞ったりすること。見栄を張ったり、上品ぶったりして、周囲に対して威圧感を与えるような態度を取ることを意味する。実際にはそうでないのに背伸びした態度を取る時に使われることが多いぞい。

🎬『ミザリー』での使用例

有名作家ポール・シェルダンが失踪し、保安官が彼が滞在していた山小屋に出向くシーンがある。そこで、山小屋のオーナーが言うのじゃよ。

“Considering who he is…famous.He doesn’t put on airs.”
あんな有名人なのに、まったく気取ったところがなかったよ。

ここでの“put on airs”っていうのは、「自分の地位や有名さをひけらかさず、自然体でいる」 という意味じゃ。

つまり、ポール・シェルダンは有名な小説家なのに、「人に優しく、気取らない」そういう性格を表しておるわけじゃな。

🎬 Example from 『Misery』

In the movie Misery,famous author Paul Sheldon goes missing,and a sheriff visits the cabin where he has been staying.The cabin’s owner says:

“Considering who he is… famous. He doesn’t put on airs.”

As I mentioned,“put on airs” means“to flaunt one’s status or fame;to act pretentious”.

In other words,Paul Sheldon is a famous author,but he is kind and humble, not showing off,and this line expresses that side of his personality.
