意味

誰かが嘘をついている、根拠のないことを言っている、あるいはデタラメを言っていることを指すイディオム。
特に、自信満々に話しているけど実際は信用できない、というような場面でよく出てくるぞい。話し手が相手の話を信じていないことを、カジュアルで少し失礼な言い方で表す表現じゃな。

例文

1. I don’t believe a word he says.He’s totally full of it.
   彼の言うことなんて一言も信じられない。完全にデタラメだよ。
2. She said she met a celebrity at the grocery store,but I think she’s full of it.
   彼女はスーパーで有名人に会ったって言ってたけど、絶対ウソだと思う。

📺『エレメンタリー』での使用例

ドラマ『Elementary』の第1話で、ジョニー・リー・ミラー演じるシャーロックは事件の関係者である女性に対し、強く追及しすぎた結果、彼女に拒絶され、話を聞けずに失敗する。ところが、ルーシー・リュー演じるワトソンがその女性と心を通わせ、信頼を得て、重要な情報を引き出すことに成功。
それに対し、シャーロックはプライドを守るようにこう言うのじゃ。

“I knew it.I knew that if I started a row in there,you’d come to her defence,and if you came to her defence,she might very well tell you the truth.”
わかってたよ。あそこで騒ぎを起こせば、君が彼女をかばいに入る。そして、君が彼女をかばえば、彼女は君に心を開き、本当のことを話すかもしれないってね。

それを聞いたワトソンは、明らかに嘘っぽいその言い訳にこう返すぞい。

“You are so full of it.”
よく言うわ。ウソばっかり。

日本語訳では、シーンの雰囲気に合わせて「負け惜しみね」と訳されておったが、基本的には「ウソつけ」「デタラメ言わないで」 という意味なのじゃ。

【Be full of it】

Meaning

This idiom is used when someone is lying,making things up,or talking nonsense.
It often comes up in situations where a person is speaking very confidently,but you can tell that what they’re saying isn’t really trustworthy.

You see,it’s a casual and a little rude way for the speaker to show
that they don’t believe what the other person is saying at all.

In short,it’s a handy expression for moments when you think,“Now now, I don’t buy that story,”.

📺 Example from 『Elementary』

In the first episode of the drama “Elementary”,Sherlock played by Jonny Lee Miller pushes a woman connected to the case a bit too hard.
As a result, she shuts him out,and he fails to get any information from her.

Later on,however,Watson,played by Lucy Liu,approaches the same woman in a very different way.She connects with her,earns her trust,and successfully draws out some crucial information.

Seeing this,Sherlock,trying to protect his pride and says:

“I knew it.I knew that if I started a row in there, you’d come to her defence,and if you came to her defence,she might very well tell you the truth.”

In other words,he claims that everything went exactly as he planned.But Watson,clearly sensing that this excuse sounds fake,fires back with:

“You are so full of it.”

This line is a casual and rather blunt way of saying“I don’t believe you at all,”“You’re lying,” or“Don’t give me that nonsense.”
